Selecting the college that is right YOU

It’s the middle of April, which means that students throughout the nation have lower than 2 weeks to make a huge decision: which college to attend for the next four years. We keep in mind quite vividly how I felt during the month of April when I was a highschool senior—panic, excitement, pressure, fear of the unknown, and anticipation and hope for the future. I spent weeks agonizing over different options and comparing colleges that, in hindsight, are like comparing apples and oranges. Also so, I discovered a whole lot through the experience and also have found that there are different factors students take into account when causeing this to be life-changing decision.

  • Gut Feeling chances are, you’ve likely visited a college campus or many. If not, now is the time to take a tour that is virtual read up on the college, and perhaps talk to present students. Sometimes it precipitates to a feeling that really tips the scales and helps a learning student determine which college campus they plan to call ‚home‘ for the better part of 4 years. It could be because you felt comfortable at the school or felt as if you recognized items of yourself in other students. Or possibly you can’t explain it—maybe you saw something occur during a college visit that just clicked for you. Whatever the case may be, a gut feeling can go a long distance.
  • Benefits and Cons Quite the opposite of the gut feeling approach, making a pros and cons list or creating a chart that compares and contrasts colleges in various areas employs a more formulaic approach. This is often helpful in organizing exactly what you are looking for in a college and what is really of value to you. Looking for possibilities to increase major or pursue a minor? Do you thrive in a classroom that is large or prefer more intimate, discussion-based classes? Do you want to be near a city or in a small college city? This technique can help you sort often your thinking and assessments.
  • Rankings, Reputation and Stereotypes We’re all familiar with common stereotypes associated with different schools, nonetheless, these stereotypes usually skip the mark—by a shot that is long. I hear students who say they want to attend a ‚prestigious university‘ nonetheless they are unable to define exactly what makes an institution ‚prestigious‘ or how this is going to affect their college experience. Similarly, students will disregard a college that is potential to an adverse reputation and rumor they believe to be true. You need to understand your source and find out the truth about any schools you are thinking about. Just must be college is rated as a ‚top college‘ somewhere doesn’t signify it’s the college that is right best fit for everyone. That features you.

There are many other facets, methods, and how to evaluate what college will provide you utilizing the experience that is ideal. Within the end, it’s probably best to select the school which you identify with in some manner.
